The word of the day is defer, and it has a couple meanings. One is to put off until a later time – if the weather is bad today, I might defer my road trip to another day in the future.
Defer also means to submit to another person’s decision, maybe because they have more authority or better knowledge.
My brother knows more about computers than I do, so if we had different opinions about how to fix a computer problem, I would defer to his expertise.
Or if I want to go to a pizza place but all my friends want Chinese food, I would defer to the majority, accept and go along with their decision.
