Hi students! Ready for today’s word of the day? The word is gasp and it’s a verb used in a couple similar ways.
You gasp when you breathe in quickly and sharply, when you’re shocked. This could be a good shock or a bad one. If my husband buys me a beautiful diamond necklace, I might gasp with surprise and joy when I see it. If I see a bad car accident happen, I might gasp in horror.
This verb is also used in the expressions gasping for breath and gasping for air. This is when you’re having difficulty breathing, either because of intense physical activity or a health problem – so you have to breathe harder to try to get enough air.
Thanks for watching today’s word of the day video – I’ll see you in the next one!
