Today’s word of the day is hem – as a noun, it’s the edge of a piece of clothing, which is finished by folding a bit of cloth under and sewing it in a straight line. Hem is also a verb meaning to fold over fabric and sew it together.
If I have a long dress that I want to make shorter, I’d cut off the extra fabric and then hem the bottom edge of the dress to give it a finished appearance.
