Today’s question is whether to say a historic event or an historic event?
We use a or an depending on the first SOUND of the next word:
- a hat (because h is a consonant sound)
- an hour (because here the h is silent, so it starts with the OW sound, a vowel sound).
Historic starts with the h sound; the h is not silent – we say historic, not istoric – so it should be “a historic event.”
But some native English speakers do say “an historic event” – you will hear it from time to time.
