Last week I taught you 10 different ways to say “happy” – and today we’ll do the opposite – we’ll learn 10 other words for “sad” – because sometimes the basic word just isn’t enough to express what you’re feeling.

Ready to learn some synonyms for “sad”? Our first word is…

1️⃣ Upset

Upset means emotionally disturbed or bothered. It can describe mild sadness — or stronger emotional pain.

✅ “I’m upset that you didn’t tell me you’d be late.”

✅ “She was really upset about the argument.”

2️⃣ Feeling Down

If someone says, “I’m feeling down,” it means generally sad or discouraged. 

✅ “He’s been feeling down ever since he found out he didn’t get the job.”

✅ “You seem a little down. Everything OK?”

If we say “down,” it’s mild to moderate sadness.

But if we say someone is “down in the dumps,” it means they’re very sad, usually for a longer period of time.

3️⃣ Disappointed

Disappointed means sad because something didn’t meet your expectations.

✅ “I was disappointed with my kids’ awful behavior.”

✅ “She was disappointed that her husband forgot her birthday.”

4️⃣ Heartbroken

Heartbroken means extremely sad, strong emotional pain — especially after someone dies or a relationship ends.

✅ “She was heartbroken after the breakup.”

✅ “They were heartbroken when their dog died.”

5️⃣ Devastated

Devastated means completely crushed emotionally. It’s even stronger than heartbroken in some situations.

✅ “He was devastated by the news of the tragedy.”

✅ “She felt devastated after losing her job.”

6️⃣ Miserable

Miserable means deeply unhappy and uncomfortable.

It can describe emotional pain or physical discomfort.

✅ “I felt miserable during that winter.”

✅ “He looked miserable after the fight.”

7️⃣ Gloomy

Gloomy means dark, depressed, or pessimistic.

It can describe a person or an atmosphere.

✅ “She was in a gloomy mood all day.”

✅ “The weather was gloomy.”

It’s less intense than devastated — but clearly negative.

8️⃣ Discouraged

Discouraged means losing confidence or hope.

It’s sadness mixed with frustration.

✅ “Don’t feel discouraged — keep trying.”

✅ “He felt discouraged after several rejections.”

9️⃣ Depressed

Depressed can mean very deeply sad for a long time.

✅ “He felt depressed after months of unemployment.”

But be careful — this word is also used for clinical depression, a medical condition.

Don’t use it casually for small disappointments. It describes serious, heavy sadness.

🔟 On the Verge of Tears

On the verge of tears means almost crying.

✅ “She was on the verge of tears after hearing the bad news.”

✅ “He looked like he was on the verge of tears.”

This describes visible sadness.

Instead of just saying “sad,” you can say:

  • upset
  • down
  • disappointed
  • heartbroken
  • devastated
  • miserable
  • gloomy
  • discouraged
  • depressed
  • on the verge of tears

Now your emotional vocabulary is much more expressive!
