Can you understand English in the real world?

Have you ever thought:

“I can understand my English teacher… so why is it so hard to understand English in the real world?”

When you watch a movie, listen to a conversation, or read an article made for native speakers… suddenly English seems a LOT harder.

There are unfamiliar expressions, slang, phrasal verbs, complicated sentences, and words being used in ways you haven’t learned. 😵‍💫

It feels like you can barely understand 50%… even though you’ve been studying English for a long time!

There’s a reason for this:

💡 English lessons are designed to help you understand.

🌎 But real-world English is NOT designed for English learners.

The vocabulary is NOT simplified.

The speed of speaking is NOT slowed down.

Nobody is stopping to explain new idioms or expressions.

And that means it’s harder to understand – and more frustrating. 😖

But if you want to be fluent, you MUST learn to understand English on a native-speaking level.

If you’re an upper-intermediate student or above, you need to start challenging yourself with English that wasn’t created for students.

Here’s something you can try today:

Find ONE piece of English made for native speakers.

It could be a YouTube video, podcast, news article, blog post, product review – anything. Don’t worry about understanding 100%.

Instead, see if you can:

  1. Understand the main idea.
  2. Notice 3-5 words or expressions that are new to you.
  3. Figure out what they mean (then look them up to check).
  4. Think about how YOU might use one or two of them.

It’ll probably feel harder than a typical English lesson.

That’s OK.

In fact, that’s the point!

The more experience you get with real-world English, the better prepared you’ll be to understand English anywhere (not just inside an English lesson).
