Catalyst (n.)
Definition: An agent that provokes or speeds significant change or action.
Example: The new policy acted as a catalyst for much-needed reform in the organization.
Discrepancy
Definition: A difference between two things that should be the same.
Example: There’s a discrepancy between the two reports.
Resilience
Definition: The ability to recover quickly from difficulties.
Example: Her resilience helped her succeed after many failures.
Implication
Definition: A possible consequence or hidden meaning.
Example: These accusations of fraud have serious implications.
Constraint
Definition: A limitation or restriction.
Example: Budget constraints delayed the project.
C1-C2 Level Verbs
Mitigate
Definition: To make something less severe.
Example: The disease can’t be cured, but medication can mitigate the symptoms.
Articulate
Definition: To express clearly and effectively.
Example: She can’t articulate what specifically she dislikes about the design.
Coerce
Definition: To persuade an unwilling person to do something by using force or threats.
Sentence: The suspect was coerced into confessing after hours of intense interrogation.
Fluctuate
Definition: To change continually; to move up and down.
Sentence: Stock prices tend to fluctuate greatly depending on market conditions.
Overshadow
Definition: To appear more prominent or important than.
Sentence: The young actor’s talent overshadowed that of his more experienced co-stars.
C1-C2 Level Adjectives
Onerous
Definition: Involving a lot of effort and difficulty; burdensome.
Sentence: The new regulations imposed onerous requirements on small businesses.
Plausible
Definition: Seeming reasonable or believable.
Example: The scientist presented a plausible theory that explained the unexpected results.
Ingenious
Definition: Clever, original, and inventive.
Example: The ingenious design of the new gadget made it both functional and stylish.
Adamant
Definition: Refusing to be persuaded or to change one’s mind.
Example: She was adamant about not attending the party, no matter what her friends said.
Inevitable
Definition: Certain to happen.
Example: With his terrible diet, gaining weight was inevitable.
C1-C2 Level Adverbs
Subsequently
Definition: After something else.
Example: He resigned and subsequently moved abroad.
Incessantly
Definition: Continuously, without stopping
Example: I couldn’t concentrate on my studies because my neighbor’s dog was barking incessantly.
Definitively
Definition: In a way that concludes/finalizes the issue.
Example: The judge’s decision definitively ended the long-standing legal dispute.
Sporadically
Definition: Occasionally, not consistently
Example: The weather forecast says it will rain sporadically during the week.
Presumably
Definition: Probably, based on available information.
Example: He left early, presumably because he wasn’t feeling well.
