One of the easiest ways to expand your English vocabulary is to learn opposites – pairs of words like big and small, good and bad, hot and cold.

Those are all basic ones – too easy, right?

Today I’ll teach you 50 intermediate-level opposites in English, focused on the topics of personality, thinking, behavior, work, and emotions – so you can take your fluency to the next level!

PERSONALITY / CHARACTER

Generous means willing to give time, money, or help, while stingy means unwilling to give or share.

  • My uncle paid for the entire family vacation — he’s incredibly generous.
  • Even though he earns a lot of money, he’s stingy and never offers to pay for anything.

Optimistic describes someone who expects good results, while pessimistic describes someone who expects bad outcomes. Which one are you?

  • Even after losing the first game, the coach stayed optimistic about winning the championship.
  • She’s pessimistic and always assumes the worst will happen.

Flexible means able to adapt or change easily, while stubborn means unwilling to change opinions or behavior.

  • Our manager is flexible and allows employees to adjust their schedules.
  • He’s so stubborn that he refuses to consider anyone else’s ideas.

Polite describes respectful and considerate behavior, while rude describes behavior that is disrespectful.

  • She was very polite and thanked the waiter for the excellent service.
  • It’s rude to answer your phone while someone is talking to you.

Honest means truthful and sincere, while dishonest means not telling the truth or acting unfairly.

  • The boy was honest and admitted he broke the window.
  • The dishonest salesman lied about the product’s quality.

THINKING / ATTITUDE

Confident means believing in your abilities, while insecure means lacking confidence or feeling uncertain.

  • She walked into the interview confident that she would do well.
  • He feels insecure about his English and avoids speaking in meetings.

Curious describes someone with a desire to learn or know more, while someone who is indifferent shows little interest or concern.

  • My daughter is curious about everything and asks endless questions.
  • He seemed indifferent to the announcement and barely reacted.

Ambitious means strongly motivated to achieve goals, while lazy or unmotivated means lacking effort or drive.

  • She’s ambitious and hopes to become the CEO one day.
  • The lazy student spent the whole weekend playing video games instead of studying.

Creative describes the ability to produce original ideas, while unimaginative means lacking originality or creativity.

  • The designer created a creative advertisement that everyone remembered.
  • The movie was boring and unimaginative, with a predictable story.

Practical means focused on realistic solutions, while impractical means unrealistic or ineffective in real situations.

  • Buying a small, reliable car was the most practical
  • His idea of walking 20 miles to work every day was impractical.

SOCIAL / BEHAVIOR

Outgoing describes someone who enjoys social interaction, while shy or reserved describes someone who avoids attention or social situations.

  • She’s very outgoing and makes friends easily wherever she goes.
  • He’s shy and usually stays quiet at parties.

Respectful means showing consideration for others, while disrespectful means lacking respect.

  • The students were respectful and listened carefully to the teacher.
  • Rolling your eyes while someone is speaking is disrespectful.

Supportive describes someone who encourages or helps others, while critical means focusing on faults or problems.

  • Her parents were supportive and encouraged her to follow her dreams.

Reliable means dependable and trustworthy, while unreliable means not dependable.

  • Maria is reliable — she always completes her work on time.
  • He’s unreliable and often forgets important appointments.

Tolerant means accepting differences or opinions, while intolerant means unwilling to accept them.

WORK / QUALITY

Efficient means completing tasks with minimal wasted time or effort, while inefficient means working slowly or wastefully.

Productive describes producing useful results, while unproductive means producing little or no useful output.

Skilled means having strong ability or expertise, while inexperienced means lacking experience or practice.

  • The skilled mechanic fixed the engine in less than an hour.

Thorough means careful and detailed, while careless means lacking attention or accuracy.

Organized describes having things arranged clearly and systematically, while disorganized means lacking order or structure.

Calm means relaxed and controlled, while anxious or nervous means worried or tense.

Enthusiastic describes strong interest or excitement, while uninterested means lacking interest.

Grateful means feeling thankful, while ungrateful means not appreciating what you receive.
